We mourn the passing of maestro Leonard Rosenman, composer of orchestral works and many film scores, among them those for Barry Lyndon (he won an Academy Award for that), East Of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, Bound For Glory.
The Brooklyn-born maestro had studied composition with Schoenberg, Roger Sessions and Luigi Dallapiccola, and his film works included techniques -- such as serialism, atonality and microtonality -- not exactly in fashion in 1950s Hollywood.
He was also -- bonus points for coolness -- James Dean's piano teacher.
