Very sad news for all opera lovers: renovations at the glorious Teatro Colon are coming in very, very late and the Buenos Aires opera house will be ready only in 2010. Delaying the centennial celebrations.
Now, since one of Daniel Barenboim's many passports is an Argentinian one, and since the maestro's generosity is known to everybody, we really think that if a team of really wonderful musicians -- with Barenboim's prestige and leadership -- who understand and appreciate Teatro Colon's importance for all music lovers, figured out a way to raise funds, maybe in a special concert, to speed up the renovation process, well, wouldn't that be just wonderful?
Maybe some corporate sponsors would even be willing to pony up some cash and help out the process, who knows.
This coming May 25, the wonderful opera house turns 100. Teatro Colon, Argentinian music lovers and opera fans worldwide deserve better than at least two more years of "Cerrado por reformas" sign.
