Now, Opera Chic would rather listen to Ennio Morricone's beautiful music in a movie theatre or, even better, in front of her humongous plasma screen -- Morricone's music being, obviously, music for film, it seems that tonight concert was a bit like a piano recital of an opera: sweet, but not exactly what it's designed for. Anyway that's why, tonight, Opera Chic opted out of the Morricone exceptional concert at la Scala.
The hommage to the maestro's extraordinary career -- we love how he managed to make high quality music popular through an "easier" medium -- took place a few hours ago, and friends who were there report us -- first thru omgomgimsoexcitedimabout2pewp semi-incoherent txt messages, then thru actual human conversation -- report us that Morricone got an endless standing ovation and the constant requests for encores -- the cheering was totally wild -- convinced the quiet, soft-spoken maestro to conduct three more pieces (the orchestra was the Filarmonica della Scala).
The greatest moment? Our friends mention the "three adagi" (Once Upon a Time in America, The Betrothed, Vatel) as the most awesome part of the evening.
We are somewhat sorry we weren't there to catch his three pieces from the crazily underrated 1900 score. Too bad he didn't conduct anything from his masterful State of Grace score (the movie's good, too, in a bangbang way, if you can take the sight of Gary Oldman's scandalously unwashed hair for about an hour and a half).
