Contractual issues certainly run unbridled in the Alagna family, as the latest story is that Gheorghiu has withdrawn from her verbal ROH agreement for next season's interpretation of Elisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos.
Shenanigans? Or what? Has Gheorghiu caught the flakes? Maybe Gheorghiu grew fussy and resentful of her husband's latest embrace with the cavalcade of international media these past couple of days, and has cancelled her performance in a bid to turn the spotlight back on herself, and upstage Mr. Diva. MY CANCELLATION KICKS UR CANCELLATION IN THE TEETH! SUCK ON THAT ROBERTO!
Aside from that, we will have to wait until tomorrow to hear about which new historical/mythological/figure/deity Alagna will compare himself to...(aside from already comparing himself to Lennon, Callas, or Domigo, what's left?)
From my house tonight, I can already hear the distant thunder of serious rumblings echoing through Piazza della Scala...
Update: The Guardian has published online an op/ed on the Alagnas that will appear in the Wednesday, December 13 print edition, which maligns both Roberto and Angela. Here's one of the finer points:
"I have myself been a victim of a sub-standard Alagna and his sub-standard wife Angela Gheorghiu. She has now withdrawn from playing the female lead in next season's Covent Garden production of Don Carlos. Given her lacklustre Tosca earlier this year, I'm tempted to say that the Royal Opera House is lucky to get the chance to cast someone else in the role."
I guess the Alagnas' can take that any way they want...
