If you build it, they will come. Sonoma, California's new music palace, the (Donald & Maureen) Green Music Center, has rolled-out its inaugural season, anchored by a new vocal series for 2012/13.
Opening night on September 29 at the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Hall (photo above) will be MC'd and piano'd by Lang Lang. Soloist star power for the rest of the season includes Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Vadim Repin and a jazz program with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis. Michael Tilson Thomas will lead two of the four performances with the San Francisco Symphony.
Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Vocal Arts Series is heavy on the mezzos with eight soloists including: DiDonato (performing "Drama Queens" with works by Handel, Monteverdi, Gluck and Haydn); Elīna Garanča, Stephanie Blythe (a program of American songs by Kate Smith); and Irish mezzo Tara Erraught (Irish songs by Hamilton Harty plus Handel and Rossini). Barbara Cook and Canadian soprano Karina Gauvin (Debussy, Massenet and Poulenc) round out the list.
