It looks stunningly colorful--real Hungarian goulash of brilliance--and is probably danced lovingly. The music is so delightful--mostly; the story is kinda goofy. I was lucky to see the production done for ABT by Nureyev for himself, Cynthia Gregory (where in the who is she?), and Erikh Bruhn, I think. It was lovely, but not as gorgeous as this Scala production.

Whoa! I am a traditionalist, but I have to say this production is a real throwback! Just checked the video at the Scala website. The stage looks really cramped and the costumes really are way too colorful--almost comic book colorful. Instead of focusing on the dancing, one keeps wondering how the dancers feel dancing in those costumes, e. g. the whirling checkerboard.
