To commemorate the centennial of the awesome Galina Ulianova, a one-week forum is taking place in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk. There's also a professional all-Russian ballet contest for forty young artists. OC is quite intrigued by the revival of the ballet “The Red Poppy” by Reingold Glière -- communist flowers in the sky ftw.
I am not into dancing but I like to fool around in the pit. It fascinates me. Bravo. The Nutcracker approaches!!!

I saw the great Ulanova dance Giselle on the Bolshoi's first visit to North American in 1959 - she would have been in her late 40s at that point and close to retirement but it was still an experience.
Teatro dell'Opera revived Red Poppy here last year - unfortunately as with most works given here at the time it was greatly revised to provide a pivotal role for the then director. Unfortunately the quality of the company - other than oksana Kucheruk as the herione and Vito Mazzeo as her pimp - it was hard to judge it as other than a curiosity piece.

It is one of my great regrets that I never saw Ulanova live. I was much more fortunate with Plisetskaya.

Oroveso - I saw Ulanov on the Friday night as Giselle and Plisetskaya the next afternoon in Swan Lake. It was a little like the Fracci-Ferri Swan Lake experience - the old order passeth giving place to the new.
