Oldtimers look static but there's an elegance, a grace, that saves it. And the voices!

Beautiful singing. It's very difficult to make singing look that simple. They took the time back then to develop properly. They knew what they were doing.

The recitatives, in particular, are really well done. Musical but entirely natural, conversational and they KNOW what they are saying. I only saw Sciutti once (Susanna in LE NOZZE - with Giulini conducting) and she was very charming.

I'll take this anyday over ANYTHING that they try and dish out nowadays!

I would like to be in concordance of opinion with Kevin and Dianne and Oroveso. The only thing for me to say - I don't think they are static. Alot of emotions not every time means alot of good taste and true interpretation. Speaking figuratively - a real pro can do her/his real job using minimum of gestures and motions ( and not for opera only;))))

The sylish, graceful singing, the legato and clear enunication of the text more than compensate for the the production's quaint feel (and rather static acting). Compare this to clips of the Salzburg Don G and you see why opera is falling off a cliff.

What a handsome couple and excellent Mozartean style! Sciutti has come in for a lot of derision for her voice at some other opera blab sites. I have always loved her!

beautiful singing here although out of sync, see also the recording by DECCA under Krips with VPO from 1955, it will not get better than that

@ Bill, I often feel like I am living on another planet when I read comments around the blogosphere.
There's no accounting for "taste", I guess? I honestly can't figure it out.

@ PN, Sigh! I was fortunate enough to hear Krips conduct DIE ZAUBERFLOTE, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and DON GIOVANNI. He looked a bit like a bald Nibelung wearing coke-bottle eyeglasses, but he knew his Mozart a la Viennois.

@Diane--You and me both! I can't believe how much vitriol is expressed regarding Renee Fleming, too! Crazy!
