The big 2011-2012 season opener at la Scala, the classic "prima" of December 7, 2011, was supposed to be Lucia di Lammermoor with Anna Netrebko, directed by Robert Carsen -- Scala GM Stephane Lissner had indicated last year in a newspaper interview that the rumor was true.
But there has been a slight change: Netrebko will indeed appear at la Scala, but she'll be Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, conducted by Daniel Barenboim, directed by Carsen, with Erwin Schrott as the Don.
trebs as opener at the scala?? i would PAY to see that

Well, it'll be nice to have her finally at La Scala!
Let's see what they can do to ruin it all.

No complaints from me. There'll sure be a lot of Scala Drama to entertain us. Plus I like the opera better. ;-)

I saw the Netrebko/Schrott Don Giovanni at Covent Garden...well, sort of. She dropped out at the interval due to illness, and was replaced by Marina Poplovaskaya, who was in my opinion even better than Trebs. The tone wasn't as creamy, but Netrebko's diction was very foggy.

I think she is a pure standard of lyric soprano ( full + coloratura). Almost paragon singing so that her voice can be sampled to students. Soprano No.1 nowadays. Hope she will appear as Lucrezia one day (of cause at Scala, undoubtedly at Scala). I'm not sure about the conductor;))) For Renée it was signore Gelmeti... Does mr.Gergiev incline to conducting it, OC? Do you know?

I have no problem with that!
Wanna be my date OC? =)

I'm glad that Anna will sing in Don Giovanni. A better opera for her I think than Lucia. Her Lucia is good.... but not great.(I'm saying this as a BIG Anna fan:))

D. A. is no walk in the park. I think it is tougher than Lucia.

This is great news. We like Don G much better than Lucia and Trebs is certainly a better Anna than Lucia. In fact, we've seen her in Don G much more often than any other opera and as DA (she was in several performances a slightly disappointing Zerlina) much more frequently than any other character and we consider it one of her best, if not her best role. We have our own ideas regarding Leporello and Elvira but this looks promising.
