New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert keeps scaryily awesome company. He was recently spotted walking around Manhattan with the main character Death/Nekrotzar from György Ligeti's opera Le Grand Macabre.
The highly-animated, staged production by designer Doug Fitch (in its first complete New York performance) will be at Avery Fisher Hall for three performances on May 27, 28 & 29.
LOL! Death looks like the Sith Lord from Star Wars. Yes, I'm a nerd. Why do you ask?

I want to see one of a picnik in Central Park: white and red checkered blanket, straw picnik basket, take-out from Dean & Deluca, and Gilbert and Death cuddling over glasses of Merlot and a marble cheese plate.

Maestro Gilbert has decided he's never going to be flashy or interesting (Gustavo Dudamel) so he'll combine his love of music noone wants to hear with his geeky personna and lo, the Philharmonic's endowment and contributions will dry up.

I'd like to have seen Solti or Celibidache pull a stunt like this to sell tickets. Too bad slick PR marketing campaigns like this weren't around back then!!

LOVE! Will be there to see the darkness in person - CAN'T WAIT!

The same gag (recurring character of Death personified) is much funnier on the outré American television show FAMILY GUY. These pictures and marketing campaign add great dignity and gravitas to Gilbert's and the N.Y. Philharmonic's reputations.
