The Romanian soprano added new photos to her gallery from a recent photoshoot where dress-up attire was platform heels, aggressive wigs, and avant-garde dresses. Trading in her light-rinse jeans, hooded sweatshirts and heels, affecting a very Lady Gaga vibe, she's a ~superstar~.
(lots of love to E.R. for the images)
Click for the rest of the photos, including Lady Gheorghiu in a green wig!
Ummm. Quanti anni ha? probably not as disturbing as madonna in some of her more recent filmclips - (rolling her varicose kerplunk-a-dunk around on the ground with nephew-aged b-boys either side of her, busting their bitten 3-decade-old moves) but same sort of problem; nobody is teaching these donnas how to age gracefully and with dignity.

Looks like she's auditioning for LULU. Come to think of it, that might be just the role for the real Gaga's opera debut.... ;-)

I thought the white frock with the pompoms, worn with the green wig, was the seriously worst mistake of the lot - until I saw the same frock reappear accessorised with the WHITE wig. Those blobs of light under each arm, like huge spare boobs: Good God, whatever was the poor woman THINKING of? And the photographer who took these can only really justify some of his/her decisions by saying "I wanted to show Ms Georghiu up as a delusional mess"...

Why doesn't she approach some French or Italian designers to promote their clothes?
She is thin and quite good-looking. The only thing she should take care of is her features to look more relaxed. But I guess this is because she feels insecure.
She had better start a psychological therapy asap.

When I saw Angela in the all black frock with the pointed wings, I immediately thought of her notorious nickname... Draculette! LOL!
As reported by OC...
"And drops the final nuclear bomb:
"Two composers, the American William Maselli and the Romanian Vladimir Cosma, are writing two operas about me. 'Bonnie & Clyde' and 'Draculette'. My nicknames have become trademarks. At first I thought, how dare they? But if the music's good, I'm singing them both. We just need a tenor now".

This is a silly photo shoot. They are obviously trying to be "far out" or outer spacey or something. They obviously aren't being serious.
It's a fine line when you are still a lovely woman and time is marching.
Her personal photos on her site suggest a woman of a certain age who is... let's just say, trying too hard.
Sometimes after a breakup women go through a phase of trying too hard!
She is lovely and does not need to work so hard to be attractive in keeping with her stage of life.
There is a difference between staying chic and stylish and sexy and just looking silly or mutton-dressed-as-lamb.
She hasn't yet figured out the difference and given what seems to be her personal taste, she may never!

I agree with the post submitted by Casual.
Here's a great photo of AG:

the classy AG I want to see... not this far-out dress up stunt.
Yup. She's trying too hard!

OC has done it again. This is fabulous. Maybe I should fly somewhere to see Angela.

Perhaps this is part of a mid-life crisis, but to me it shows that La Gheorghiu has a wonderful sense of humor. Is this any worse than Renee Fleming making an indie rock covers album with her sister and daughter singing back up?
Posted by: Linda Smith | March 04, 2010 at 06:44 PM
So that's what she's been doing instead of singing Carmen?
Posted by: y2k | March 04, 2010 at 06:51 PM
Oh no she didn't!!!Bwahahahaha oh Angela I love you but you're not in your 20's anymore & cannot pull any of this off. I do like the white dress it's really cute but it could be styled a lot better.

After reviewing AGs appearances, as posted on her web site... her last public performance was 6th of December, 2009. Her next scheduled appearance is on March 29, 2010 at the Met, in the all too familiar role of Violetta. By my calculation, that's 15 straight weeks of no public performances. Angela says she's preparing for her upcoming Adriana Lecouvreur performances happening next November, 2010 at ROH Covent Garden. And I believe she is doing that. But a singer like Beverly Sills could learn the role of Adriana in under a week, if pressed. So, I think AG is bored visiting monastery's in Romania and wants to re-enter stardom. Remember, Angela's bi-line is "the most glamorous opera singer in the world". Her glam is her calling card and that makes her stand out in the presence of younger, more exciting voices like Harteros. I think Angela needs to feel relevant again... based on these far-out photo shoots.

Oh, La Draculetta is awake now... now protect your house and yourself with lots of garlic, and maybe she'll spare you...
I wonder when she will be side-to-side with Tilda Swinton in a new avantgarde-horror movie about Nosferatu or Erszébet Bathóry.
Wo knows? One shoud mail these photos to Tim Burton or someone like him... ;))))

Only slightly unrelated: Kate Aldrich, the Met's new pinch hitter for La Crazyetta up there, sings Carmen in Pittsburgh this month :D

I cannot understand why you are so bitchy to AG. Has she done anything bad to you personally and why not make photoes like this if she has the figure and the FACE to go with it. Why does age matter to you so much? These pictures are not to be taken seriously. It looks to me that she did it for fun more than even as a publicity stunt. Even if she is around fifty and so is Renee Fleming, they still look phantastic and many would like to look like this and who blames them for making the best of it? It looks to me that maybe, some of you are jealous.

What a narcissistic moron!

I love it. I'm sick of Netrebko and Renee doing the floaty butterfly Mariah Carey look. This is actually cool, trendy, and edgy. Viva Angela. This is the ddirection I want to watch my opera divas going in. Not to be boring.

@Linda Smith, Re: Renee-please, say it ain't so! Even Fleming needs to draw the line somewhere!

che fosse pazza lo sapevamo da tempo..
Posted by: francesco | March 04, 2010 at 11:30 PM
@Francesca: yes, it is true. It was in the LA Times recently. I recall that one of the songs Fleming is going to interpret was originally done by the Jefferson Airplane ("Today").
Posted by: Linda Smith | March 05, 2010 at 01:29 AM
To Captain Jack - yes, that photo in your link is glamorous and sexy but still classy.
To Want a Date - I think she has been spending a lot of time in Romania and feathering her nest back home for an eventual career there as a celebrity / teacher / personality. She has recently made many television appearances and interviews there... maybe that is the only place she can still get that kind of attention, but, she is a smart gal who knows to go where the spotlight is!
About Adriana, musically it is not that difficult but vocally, it is definitely a strenuous role especially for a lyric soprano. It requires a lot of sustained singing of looooong phrases in the middle voice, plus speaking. It takes a lot of stamina, you have to build up to it slowly to master it well. So, if she were actually taking a few months to work it well into her voice, that would probably be a good thing and I personally wouldn't knock it!

Almost as hilarious as her (ex) husband's recent publicity drive (here on French TV) doing his dog'n'pony "I was poor & went to Italy with no experience and the maestro made me a star" schtick. Actually, I think they could still be married - anything for a press clipping.........

Well, she seems to be getting better publicity then he is, he just appeared on the cover of classical singer magazine!! ;-)

No "pazza" Francesco, only vain. Thant's her sin. We shouldn't crucify her for this.
Vanity is a human characteristic.
If you were a famous fashion model, for example or a renowned architect you would be vain too and you would pose with arrogance and a superficial attitude in front of the cameras. It would not add a plus to your worth of course, but you would be trapped in your myth too, just like her. She was great and very important for the opera. Not any more though.
So do accept the fact that it is not easy for her to withdraw from the stage and disappear just like that. She is going to try to stay as long as possible under the spotlight and one cannot deny that she is still very elegant, beautiful, looking much younger and fresher than Renee Fleming.
Be polite to those who have given us great pleasure and quality singing for so long.

@Frank: and she still sounds great, too!
Posted by: Linda Smith | March 05, 2010 at 06:38 PM
Dear Linda you are partially right because after so many cancelations and rare appearances it is obvious that her voice is not in the best condition anymore.
Posted by: Frank | March 05, 2010 at 09:08 PM
My only quibble with these photos is that AG's expression is the same in almost all of them. If she'd affected some different moods in them, they would have been more interesting. And that's the fault of the photographer, perhaps. It's that same smile appearing over and over again in these that bothers me.
Who cares how old she is? She's a beautiful woman and she can wear what she wants.
Posted by: Lily | March 06, 2010 at 01:22 PM
@Frank: I would say that the increase in the number of cancellations shows that she wishes to preserve a voice that is still very much there for as long as possible, and not because it is "not in the best condition anymore". One of the problems is that performances are often scheduled several years in advance and artists have no idea how they will feel when the time comes to actually perform a role, especially as they get older. Gheorghiu is only in her 40's but some singers don't even get to that point from over use, etc. Perhaps it can be said that she is overly cautious!:)
@Lily: most fashion models have even less facial expression than Gheorghiu does here.:)

Posted by: chris | March 07, 2010 at 12:29 PM
What an unbelievable amount of misogyny in these comments about Gheorghiu (and Fleming!), mostly from other women -- so typical. Referring to her age and her changing face and "time marching on" and "you're not in your 20s anymore" -- would the same be said of any tenor or baritone near 50 years who chose to do something similar? What happened to "50 is the new 40"? Is that only for men? Somehow it's always the same: it's never okay for women to age as gracelessly as men or to try new (silly) things and experiment after "a certain age." Here's hoping that "certain age" keeps getting OLDER for women as well as for men.
