He takes opera out of refrigeration, turns it on its head, shakes it up, and gleefully hands it back to you as it sprays all over your freshly-pressed & tailored M.Bardelli shirt. Always an imaginative variation of you favorite opera lurking up his sleeve (we posted most recently about his Bregenz Aida featuring the disembodied parts of The Statue of Liberty), British director Graham Vick does it again for the season opening of La Fenice. Puccini's Manon Lescaut got the Vick treatment a few nights ago in Venice in a new, sold-out production full of clowns, school kids and teddy bears to open the 2010 season. C'mon...what else would you expect from a Commander of the British Empire?
OC was in Venice two years ago for Vick's La Fenice season opener with Puccini’s La Rondine, fueled by champagne during Venice's Carnevale weekend. Good times.
