Yeah yeah yeah yeah. But was the singing any good? Or didn't that matter much? I won't think an opera has been made "contemporary" until the music gets modernized a lot, to bring that up-to-date too. Why stop with just the staging? Cowards stuck in the mud of traditionalism, no doubt. No guts or courage. We need Wagner made atonal. Y E A H!

I forgot to add that there is another good reason to modernize the music. If you make, say, Wagner atonal, the quality of the singing probably doesn't much matter, since nobody can tell if it's good or bad. Think of the advantages of THAT! You can use any old tenor or soprano you can put your hands on, even the cheapest.

Looks like fun! Wagner deserves this treatment. Makes him like all the rest! VULNERABLE...

do big projections work in the opera house, or do they lack impact? i suspect they seem like a background image or something seperate from the live action. new met ring may rely too heavily on this device. time will tell. has OC seen a production where projections were effective and had a powerful impact? i cant wait to see the cnn election campaign hologram technology in the house!

Very Cirque du Soleil - mind you I like Cirque more than I like Wagner so....

Looks like another overly busy Ring where the story, the nuances, and the music are swamped by a director and stage designer's respective conceits. Most of these productions are high-priced spreads that are beyond boring, beyond predictable and beyond bothering with. If the global financial crisis doesn't kill off opera jaded, infantile directors will soon do so. Ugh!

Is she trying to outdo Madonna's pointed- metal "headlight" covers? A perfect fit for the "Ring!" Wagner's Ring to me is heavy metal classical symphonic music for exaggerated brass, orchestra and voices! So different, say, from Lohegrin, Flying D or Parsifal. But what do I know? But I know what doesn't move me.

props for Mehta.....but mind you, i'm a fan of this conductor. as for the production, looked like a total mess. obviously, the MATERIAL gurl didn't send off a good influence to everyone....the "bewbage" costume looked down right "tacky".

Why does every modern staging of any opera seem to always involve an orgy?!

Just saw this on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it. There were some (very) silly moments, but the last act was superb and beautifully done.
And yes, the singing was very good - and the whole orchestra took a bow onstage with Mehta.
