Not Kosher: "Opera star Florez cooks Shrimp a la Pavarotti"
(foto REUTERS/Enrique Castro-Mendivil)
World-famous opera tenor Juan Diego Flórez, visiting his native Peru before his wedding this weekend, made his cooking debut on Wednesday with a Peruvian-Italian fusion dish called "Shrimp a la Pavarotti."
Dressed in a white chef's shirt at a restaurant overlooking Lima's Pacific Ocean waters, Florez whipped up a shrimp flambe in a sauce of orange juice and balsamic vinegar to pay homage to the late opera great Luciano Pavarotti.
Thankfully, shrimp haven't got any bones in them!
(We suspect Big Luciano would have eaten the shrimp whole, raw, making some whale-like happy noises. And the Lord bless his soul for that)

Super-reader Chris sent OC an online gallery stuffed with dozens more shots of Flórez showing his skillz in the kitchen. Go here!!

I'm going to try the shrimp in orange juice and balsamic vinegar. Hope it is as marvelous as his "Cessa di piu resistere."

Sorry, fiancee, not fiance.

But where is the actual recipe? I am definitely going to try this, though I have no chance of hitting a high C, I may be able to cook as well as JDF!

Just got my April OPERA NEWS with JDF on the cover. The article keeps referring to his "wife". Am I not supposed to read it until it's actually April?

She has been his "wife" since they were married last year or the year before in Vienna in a civil ceremony. Lima is merely the RELIGIOUS ceremony.

The civil ceremony was April 23, 2007, in Vienna. I read recently in an interview that the date was the four-year anniversary of the day they met - in Vienna. (Verray romantic - no???) The Austrian government granted him citizenship to permit the civil marriage.

Umm, yummy! I'd eat your shrimp anytime! Bon Chance!

I thought Florez was already an honorary citizen of Austria and it was for that reason he decided to marry there, not that citizenship was granted him IN ORDER for him to be married. Can someone clarify this small point for me?

"The Austrian government granted him citizenship to permit the civil marriage."--says Linda in Co.
This is NOT correct. He was made an honorary citizen before his marriage in recognition of his artistry. He got married in Vienna since he was already a citizen there. I got the final word on this from Palacio himself.
