The Familiar Landscapes of La Bohème. With (.) (.)
Below are some exclusive shots from the Austria set of director Robert Dornhelm's La Bohème, with *~opera stars~* Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón singing the leads. We all know we're gonna see this one, so here's a preview. Her cap in the picture above looks like a giant thong.

She DEYUHD!!!

No wonder Mimi's tiny hand is frozen. I guess poverty stricken embroideresses can whip up a red satin number that allows the chest to breathe. She may look a little peaked but I'm delighted to see Rolando looking hale and hearty. And I'm so going to see this. Belated happy birthday, caro Rolando! Mas anos de salud, exitos y cancion!

Why not wonder the poor girl got sick - its the dead of winter and cold in that garrett and she's all exposed. And that artist is really starving - he can't even afford fingers for his gloves!

One - that would be me - is reminded of the story of when Lillian Gish was filming a silent version of La Boheme. Erte had designed costumes in wool for Mimi but Gish insisted that they be made of silk. He went into a snit but Gish was actually justified - he was looking at it as a stage designer aiming for authenticity she was looking at it as to how it would captured on film.

Cause of death: plunging temperatures and decolletege. (You've heard the expression "cold as a diva's #!&"?)

In that last photo, Rolando looks like he's daubing whiteface on Anna. He looks a lot better than the Cielo e Mar video on youtube--he sings like an angel and looks like a wraith.

I neglected to add that I think Stratas was amazing in the Met's Boheme; so was Maria Kanyova in City Opera's production back in 2001 and neither wore a red dress. Rolando sang Rudolpho for City Opera and was superb.

...and again she looks like a h00ker.
Opera of today - no art, just commercial

The red dress is all wrong for Mimi; she's meant to be the demure one. What are they going to put Musetta in - bondage gear?

Cabell was actually a dominatrix in Washington National Opera's production last fall. No bondage gear this time... just a purple dress and orange-ish wig. It's not going to be pretty.
