At 19, she was the youngest performer ever chosen for the Met's Young Artists' Program, and she was simultaneously picked for the role of Barbarina in a production of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." Other cast members included soprano Renée Fleming, mezzo Cecilia Bartoli and bass-baritone Bryn Terfel.
"I thought that all my Christmases had come at once," de Niese said.

The article is daft enough: "De Niese is a baroque specialist herself, but Handel's her man". But that is some powerful PR machinery in action. This girl looks good on stage and sings with great enthusiasm- see her Hebe on "Les Indes Galantes" DVD. Unfortunately, it's a small voice that has been ordered to pump it up another notch. As a result, her debut album is simply painful to hear- close miking, constant screamfest. Bayrakdarian, another fine Baroque singer, has been doing the same thing live recently. Both sang small roles at the Met and have been Met-astasized into pin-ups, voice be damned. Apparently de Niese will try Verdi soon enough. Dance, puppet, dance!

Oh yes..It is indeed the age of great PR..
Baroque Specialist?..Hell No..
Having listened to many many artist through the yrs.
Artists from way back when..I can say is..She is nowhere close to the great artists of the past and present..At best, she is looks good visually..And people who don't know much about opera..Have no clue about great singing..if one listens to Her current Cd.One cannot find one phrase where she uses any of the technical skills attributed to great singing..such as a crescendo or an amazing trill ..i will retract my statement...if one can find one phrase ..But i am absolutely positive there will be not one to find..As a previous person said...This article is daft and i might add sounds like they have being paid off to say something nice about Ms.De Niese and her talent..Now that is indeed Fantastic PR indeed!
